Greek Mythology

Athena

The Greek goddess of wisdom, handicraft and warfare, is the daughter of Zeus and the Titaness Metis.

Athena sprang into being fully grown and armed from the head of her father Zeus, after he had swallowed the pregnant Metis.

Athena made her own way in the world and she lived her life as she wanted to live it. She is a symbol of civilized behaviour, logic and compassion mixed with wisdom. She is considered by some the first “career woman”.

Since the Renaissance Athena has become an international symbol of wisdom, the arts, and classical learning. Western artists and allegorist have often used Athena as a symbol of freedom and democracy.

Athena was known as “Atrytone” (the Unwearying), “Parthenos” (Virgin), and Promachos (she who fights in front). Athena was sometimes given the epithet “Hippia” (of the horses) referring to her invention of the bit, bridle, chariot and wagon.

Athena was the patron goddess of heroic endeavour, she was believed to have aided the heroes Perseus, Heracles, Bellerophon and Jason.

Athena was said to competed against the mortal Arachne in a weaving competition, afterwards transforming Arachne into the the first spider.

Athena was a superb strategist, therefore a great asset in terms of warfare. However, Athena liked using her wisdom, and much preferring to negotiate and problem-solving to keep the peace.

And her talent doesn’t stop there! She was also celebrated as the Patron of weavers, potters, goldsmiths, sculptors, musicians and horsemen. She was accredited with inventing the first sailing ship, the yoke, the bridle, as well as the flute and trumpet.

Athena is a superb role model for girls and women, she was her own person, skilled, brave and wise.

She was the patron of the city Athens and spent a lot of time studying and mastering many areas of knowledge including law. She is known for her superb logic and intellect. And she was often called upon to act as a judge, and the legends abound to her fairness and wisdom.
